The original detail of the Southern side of the building has unfortunately been buried within a shell which Americans would probably describe as an early municipal block. This was apparently added by the army who took the premises over during one of the wars. The damage done by the time it was given back was to expensive to be returned to its original state. The present owners try to maintain the fabric of the building but a complete restoration would be almost impossible. Fortunately the other elevation has retained its appearance. These pictures were taken on a rare open day (the only one I know of so far), during summer 2000. A jazz band were playing in the tent, and there were several stalls in the car park. Limited guided tours took place throughout the day. Hopefully this will become a regular event.
