Sollershotts East and West

Sollershotts East leads from Sollershott Circus past the end of South View ending at Baldock Road (almost opposite Cloisters Road), it is mainly residential. At the end just past the car park for Howgills in Southview is a 19th century house now in use as the Garden Lodge Hotel and Spice Garden Restaurant, formerly known as the Ambassador Hotel.

Beyond this are old farm buildings or stables which have been converted for present day use and access to new housing at redeveloped old tennis club and the junction with Baldock Road.

An old postcard from 1910 of Sollershotts East

On the corner of Sollershott East and Spring Road is Sollershott Hall

Sollershotts West , from Sollershotts Circus almost to the West edge of the town at Highfield , is home of some of the most exclusive early Garden City homes . Within massive gardens with heavy screening by hedges and trees , few offer much of a view to passers by.

On the North side

St Brighids by Parker and Unwin 1908 , was built for Edmund Hunter , who brought one of the Garden City's early businesses Edmundsbury Weaving to the town.

Houses by Parker and Unwin from 1910 , C.M.Crickmer 1907 and 1908 and W.H. Cowlishaw 1907 are well hidden at the end of the long drives behind hedgerows.

This description by Country Properties in the summer of 1998 will give you some idea of what you would find. I quote ...

"Tettenhall , Sollershott West , Letchworth

A real part of Letchworth's heritage has just come onto the market place. This beautiful old 1907 Garden City Residence was designed by C M Crickmer for a gentleman by the name of M Connal Parker Esq. The property still holds all its original charachter , charm and rooms as were designed back in 1907. it is a rare opportunity to purchase a property of this style and charachter in need of sympathetic restoration although the roof has just received a complete stripdown and replacement.

The house presently consists of 3 large reception rooms , kitchen , pantry , large scullery , ground floor cloakroom , lots of walk in cupboards , 6 bedrooms , upstairs bathroom amd double garage plus several out buildings. It is set well back on its plot of 3/4 of a acre with an additional 1/2 acre by separate negotiation. Offers around £550,000 "

To the South On the corner is "Carfax" which faces Broadway and a picture can be found at that page

Further along "Tanglewood" is a lovely 1907 house by Baillie Scott.

Next to this is an assymetrical semi detatched pair by Parker and Unwin 1906/7.
